Mortal Shell II Preview: Brutal Combat, Bigger World, No Mercy

Mortal Shell II Preview: Brutal Combat, Bigger World, No Mercy

Posted on August 11, 2026 By WeFlyRCGameVerse No Comments on Mortal Shell II Preview: Brutal Combat, Bigger World, No Mercy

Mortal Shell II is shaping up to be one of 2026’s more interesting Soulslike releases. Developed by Cold Symmetry and published by Playstack, the standalone sequel expands the ideas of the original with faster combat, a broader interconnected world, deeper weapons, and an even greater emphasis on challenging encounters.

The full game launches on August 20, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. A limited Steam open beta also offers roughly the opening three hours, with selected progress carrying over to the final release.

Since the finished version is not yet available, the scores below should be viewed as a pre-release assessment based on officially revealed gameplay, systems, and beta information.

A Darker and More Ambitious Soulslike

Mortal Shell II once again places players in a disturbing dark-fantasy world filled with ruined temples, frozen graveyards, grotesque creatures, and hostile warriors.

Players control the Harbinger, whose journey revolves around reclaiming the stolen eggs of the Undermether. Exploration leads through a compact open world rather than a completely linear sequence of areas. PlayStation describes more than 60 dungeons scattered across this world, creating plenty of opportunities for optional challenges and discoveries.

That structure could give the sequel considerably more freedom than its predecessor without turning it into an enormous open-world RPG.

Combat Looks Faster and More Aggressive
Mortal Shell II Shows Off Updated Gameplay And More In New Showcase

Combat appears to be the biggest evolution.

The original Mortal Shell rewarded careful timing through its signature Harden mechanic. The sequel keeps its unforgiving identity while making battles more aggressive and expressive.

Most notably, Mortal Shell II removes the traditional stamina gauge. This potentially changes the rhythm of combat dramatically, allowing players to stay offensive rather than constantly retreating while waiting for stamina to recover. Executions have also been expanded, while weapon customization offers more upgrade possibilities.

The result looks less restrained than many traditional Soulslikes, although precision remains important. Enemies can still punish careless attacks, making patience and positioning essential.

Combat Potential: 9.2/10 — Excellent

The possession system remains central to the experience.

Throughout the world, players discover the bodies of powerful fallen warriors known as Shells. Possessing them provides access to different strengths and abilities, allowing players to build combat styles around preferred characters.

Official gameplay material has shown Shells including Tiel, Eredrim, and Proxima, while the Devout Edition confirms there are eight playable Shells in total.

This system gives Mortal Shell II an identity beyond simply copying Dark Souls. Instead of committing to only one conventional character class, players can search for warriors that better match their approach.

Exploration Could Be a Major Improvement
A Mortal Shell Sequel Has Serious Potential

The sequel’s compact open-world design may become another highlight.

Rather than filling an enormous map with repetitive objectives, Cold Symmetry describes interconnected paths containing new Shells, weapons, memories, upgrades, and hidden areas.

More than 60 dungeons could provide substantial variety, although quantity alone will not guarantee quality. Enemy diversity, environmental storytelling, boss design, and meaningful rewards will determine whether exploration remains exciting over dozens of hours.

Exploration Grade: A-

Curiosity Meter: 8.8/10

Visual Style Remains Disturbingly Beautiful

Visually, Mortal Shell II continues the franchise’s oppressive dark-fantasy direction.

Ancient temples, forests, bone-covered structures, frozen landscapes, and grotesque enemies create environments that feel hostile even before combat begins. The world appears deliberately unpleasant, but that discomfort is part of its appeal.

It is not trying to deliver colorful fantasy. Everything is built around decay, death, and mystery.

On PC, the minimum specifications currently list an RTX 2060 Super or Radeon RX 6600, 16GB RAM, and an SSD, with approximately 70GB of storage required for the full release.

Alternative Rating

★★★★½ / 5

Grade: A-

Difficulty Meter: 9/10 – Patience Required

Soulslike Appeal: 9.3/10

Current Verdict: Strongly Worth Watching

These ratings reflect the game’s pre-release potential rather than a final verdict.

Is Mortal Shell II Worth Watching?

The most encouraging element is that Cold Symmetry does not appear satisfied with simply producing a larger version of its first game.

Faster stamina-free combat, eight Shells, deeper weapon progression, free exploration, and dozens of dungeons indicate a sequel attempting to expand its identity while preserving the punishment expected from the genre.

Its biggest question is whether those systems remain balanced across an entire playthrough. Removing stamina could create exhilarating combat, but it must still prevent battles from becoming mindless aggression.

Final Verdict

Mortal Shell II currently looks like a confident evolution of Cold Symmetry’s Soulslike formula. Its faster combat and expanded exploration could appeal both to returning players and genre fans searching for something slightly different from traditional stamina-driven combat.

With its full release scheduled for August 20, the final question is whether the complete game can maintain the quality suggested by its systems and early material.

For now, 8.8/10 feels like an appropriate score for its potential: punishing, atmospheric, mechanically ambitious, and clearly designed for players who enjoy earning every victory.
